Bicycle Rear Rack Bicycle rear rack information

I'm thinking of getting panniers will they work with this rack?

I have this rear bicycle rack http://www.amazon.com/Schwinn-Bicycle-Seat-Post-Rack/dp/B000DZD3F6 (it was cheap and bought it with my bike) but am unsure if I could use it with most double panniers? Do I need to buy another rack?

Thanks

  1. Seat post racks can’t support very much weight, they are for light loads only. Panniers can hold a lot of stuff, it would be easy to put too heavy a load which could result in breaking either the rack, or even your seatpost. You need to buy a rack that can support your panniers at 3 or 4 mounting points. The rack you have also has nothing to prevent the panniers going into the spokes of the wheel

  2. Hey Swerlies . My brother left me with the same seat post rack. Its heavy but strong.
It can actually fit a few types of panniers .On the rack there are like 4 loop areas on the
bottom edge that can accept some pannier clips .
There are also some types of dbl panniers that fit like a saddle over a horse sort of . They
would fit right over the rack then you’d cinch the bags down . Either way ,there are option
if you like me and hate to buy new when you have something already working.

I bet the guys at your local bike shop can rig something cool up to keep the bag(s) off your
spokes. I ended up gluing velcro strips to the top of the rack and the bottom of a lunch cooler bag .
The thing hold great even on the ruff stuff.

  3. Piece of JUNK! Do not buy. The panniers, as they hang down, have no place to hang onto & will eventually find their way into the spokes of the rear wheel. What you need is one that bolts onto the frame of the bike. You didn’t state what type of bike…a road bike, a mountain bike, etc.

For a bike with 26" wheels, see first link below. For 700C wheels, 2nd link. For a bike with disc brakes – 3rd link. See your local bike shop 1st if you don’t know how to install one. Stay FAR AWAY from those kinds that merely clamp onto the seatpost.
