Is this enough to keep my bike from being stolen?
I'm going to college soon, and I'm bringing my bike with me. It's not too expensive, about 0 Schwinn bike.
I was planning on using a kryptonite u-lock (a one, mind you) to lock the frame and front wheel to the bike rack, then using a cable lock to attach the rear wheel to the frame. I'll be taking the seat with me.
Will this be enough to deter bike thieves? The college is in Irvine, if it matters any.
Mountain Bikes and Luggage Racks?
I'm thinking of getting a mountain bike that has one of those rear shock absorbers isolating the seat from the rear wheel. However, I'm also going to be needing a sturdy luggage rack and some saddlebags (panniers). So my question is... if the luggage rack is designed to attach both to the frame under the seat AND the rear wheel axle, how is the frame going to flex when the shock absorber is compressed. It needs some flex, right? Are there luggage racks especially designed for bikes that have a rear shock? I want to avoid the racks that attach ONLY to the seat column, as they're not sturdy enough to handle the weight I need.
I guess I was hoping that someone would know of a specific model of rack designed with a movable hinge support system... from a mechanical engineering standpoint, it seems like it should be possible.
As for having shocks on a bike to be used primarily in the street, I'm riding in hills, and some of those downhill stretches have some brutal bumps. Less stress on the frame, less stress on the stuff I'm carrying (like my laptop computer) and less chance of losing control of the thing. Though I agree some sort of hybrid would probably be better than a "pure" mountain bike.
I need to attach a pannier to my MTB. But don't have any bolts. Help?
I've bought a pannier rack for my mountain bike. i have the eyelets on the frame but the bolts that screw in near the rear wheel nuts aren't included. Does anyone know what these nuts are called and is there a specific size for these.
If it helps my bike is a Specialized Rockhopper. Probably 2005 or 2006.
Thanks
Darren
What is the best strategy to prevent bike theft?
Hello,
I brought my near-decade-old mountain bike with me to my college campus this past summer, along with a cable lock to secure it. Unfortunately, I made the stupid mistake of leaving my bike secured to a bike rack behind my dorm building one night (although I was sure I secured it properly by putting the cable through the front tire, frame, and bike rack). The next day I went to take it to class and realized it had been stolen, lock and all.
Almost 3 months later, I decided to buy a new bike to ride at college, and I want to make sure I educate myself as much as possible to prevent this bike's theft. This is what I've learned so far:
-Whenever I'm not riding it, it will either be in my dorm room or locked outside a building on a bike rack (except outside my dorm).
-So far I plan to use a U-lock going through the rear wheel, frame and bike rack, and a cable lock to go through the front tire, frame, and bike rack.
-The seat has a quick-release latch so I plan to just take it with me when I need to leave my bike outside (during a class, for example). I know there are cable locks for quick release seats, but I'd feel better just having it with me.
-The front wheel also has a quick-release lever, but the cable lock will go through it.
-It isn't feasible for me to bring the bike with me indoors to my classes, since many of them are in small classrooms or aren't on the first floor.
-I've also read that it's best to try to lock your bike to a rack with many other bikes to reduce the risk of it "standing out" and being a subject of theft.
Aside from what I've mentioned above, can anyone give advice on what else I can do to prevent my bike's theft (in part or in full)? I'm especially wary since my bike was stolen once so I'd like to do whatever I can to prevent it from happening again.
Thanks!
Looking for rear rack to fit my Raleigh Detour (large wheel, low seat stay)?
My bike Raleight Detour 3.5 pic @ http://www.raleighusa.com/bikes/hybrid/detour-35-11/
has a relatively low seat stay and a large wheel (thus the top of the rear wheel is much higher than the seat stay). I want to buy a rear rack but most of them have 2 short rods connecting between the seat stay and the rack--since the rack is above the top of the wheel, this will not work on my bike.
Could someone find a rack for my bike? It must have a rat trap Spring load, and not too expensive, please, ~). Or better, could you point out which ones will work at Amazon.com?
Thanks a bunch.
Frame or complete bike ideas for a touring/commuter bike w/Rohloff QR hub?
I was given a Rohloff hub in trade for some tech support. It is the non-disc, quick-release type, already in a 26" wheel. I also have the chain tensioner. The hub is meant for 135mm rear spacing.
I would like to build or buy a bike for commuting over some crappy roads and sidewalks. Some wide tires, rack, and fenders are a high priority for this bike. I prefer steel frames, and if possible I'd like to avoid using the chain tensioner (ugly). That means an eccentric bottom bracket or rear dropouts that allow the rear wheel to move to adjust chain tension.
So far, my top 2 ideas are the Surly Karate Monkey and the IRO Rob Roy. I am totally open to suggestions, and I'm in no hurry since I already have a bike.
Where can I buy a back seat saddle for my cruiser bike?
I always see this girl on campus who rides a black electra cruiser with a back-rack saddle. It's basically a back seat that is attached above the rear wheel. Can anyone find a website that sells these? It doesn't have to be for an electra, my cruiser isn't. Thanks.
How much can heavy duty bike racks carry, and where could I find one online?
I'm looking for a bike rack that would be able to carry a passenger over the rear wheel. I realize that it's a little bit of a stretch, but I've seen people giving others rides and I'd like to be able to do the same.
If you don't believe this is possible, please help me find the highest capacity rack you know of, or most reliable, or just your favorite if you've had one you've liked for a while.
I would like to be able to find this online or near Boston, MA, so I would appreciate a website or a business name so that I can find it.
Thanks for your help!
Any Suggestions On A Bicycle For Commuting to College?
I have a bike but it is totally falling apart and I would like to use a bike to help me get into shape, as a year of only walking and using a treadmill is getting dull.
I am 5 feet 3 inches and would be using the bike at least 3-5 days of the week going to class, 6 miles each day, maybe a bit more, so relative comfort is important. I would like it to be able to handle inclines (not sharp ones, though). I'm not totally athletic yet but I doubt I would have much of a problem with the inclines, but a little help would be nice
I don't know much about bikes and how universal they are, but I would like it to have a rack attached to the back or at least the capability of having a small rack attached. (I'd probably just use my book bag but just in case...) Not a necessity, though.
I would also like it to have both front and rear wheel brakes.
And here's where the problem comes in... I have a budget of 0, but perhaps I could swing 0. So that pretty much knocks out the models in bike stores.
I've already been looking but since I'm a bicycle novice, number of gears don't mean much to me, nor do the tire heights, though I think the bike I have now is a 24" mountain bike, and I think it's a 10-speed (it's old). I've heard that people who are an inch or two taller than me have a bit of trouble with 26", so I kind of want to stay in the 24" range unless the seat on a particular 26" can be really lowered.
I tried doing all the research myself but now I just feel overwhelmed and I know there are people out there who know WAY more about bikes than I do! Thanks so much in advance for any suggestions!
need help rebuilding my Mountain bike!!?
http://www.target.com/Schwinn-Dual-Suspension-Bike-S-60/dp/B00160JSLA/sr=1-1/qid=1252708123/ref=sr_1_1/184-3333622-9409831?ie=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&frombrowse=0&rh=k%3Aschwinn%20s60&page=1
ok so it was stripped over night while locked at the bike rack at school. From what I can see, everything in the front is there. Most of the back part of the bike is gone except the rear derailler.
Missing:
-Entire rear wheel
-Rear cogs (not sure if it is cassette or freewheel)
-entire seat (post, clamp, saddle)
What price range am i looking at to rebuild, and is it worth it?
Also, I'm not too sure about HOW to rebuild it. Are most rear wheels interchageable for mountain bikes?
So like, if i buy a rear wheel and a 7-speed cassette, will they fit together and good to go? what else would I need (small parts)??? THANKS!!
