Is this enough to keep my bike from being stolen?

I'm going to college soon, and I'm bringing my bike with me. It's not too expensive, about 0 Schwinn bike.
I was planning on using a kryptonite u-lock (a one, mind you) to lock the frame and front wheel to the bike rack, then using a cable lock to attach the rear wheel to the frame. I'll be taking the seat with me.
Will this be enough to deter bike thieves? The college is in Irvine, if it matters any.

Mountain Bikes and Luggage Racks?

I'm thinking of getting a mountain bike that has one of those rear shock absorbers isolating the seat from the rear wheel. However, I'm also going to be needing a sturdy luggage rack and some saddlebags (panniers). So my question is... if the luggage rack is designed to attach both to the frame under the seat AND the rear wheel axle, how is the frame going to flex when the shock absorber is compressed. It needs some flex, right? Are there luggage racks especially designed for bikes that have a rear shock? I want to avoid the racks that attach ONLY to the seat column, as they're not sturdy enough to handle the weight I need.
I guess I was hoping that someone would know of a specific model of rack designed with a movable hinge support system... from a mechanical engineering standpoint, it seems like it should be possible.

As for having shocks on a bike to be used primarily in the street, I'm riding in hills, and some of those downhill stretches have some brutal bumps. Less stress on the frame, less stress on the stuff I'm carrying (like my laptop computer) and less chance of losing control of the thing. Though I agree some sort of hybrid would probably be better than a "pure" mountain bike.

what is a good fair price on a trek 800 antelope in good working condition (chicago); paint is fine?

specs: 15 speeds, rear rack, thumb shifters, suntour 3gx -something like this- rear deraillier,19 omcj frame, made in taiwan. i asked what the front brand piece looks like and he said there is 5 lines, which might indicate late 80s vintage.

http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/company/believe/

seems to have low miles; tires original prolly with the dimple stuff still there; occassional riding older guy had it, I believe.

was recently tuned and checked

the seller is asking 5

this seems to be the avg Craigslist price in chicago for this style bike. so I am not sure what CL seller *finally* get vs just asking.
the tires are labeled trek. alum rims. quick rels front wheel and seat (there is a fancy seat with a chain n it to prevent theft, too) .

Who can help me tackle my slightly off the wall DIY project?

I am a high school teacher who likes to get part time jobs over the summer. This summer, one of my jobs will be working as kennel help in my county's humane society. It's located in the next town over and I plan on riding my road bike. I want to take my dog Bernie to work with me. The distance is much too far (about 5-7 miles) to consider a simple bike basket--it just wouldn't be safe for him. What I would like to do is mount a rear attaching rack that attaches to both the seat and the back wheel and then attach a small dog carrier (my pup is only about 14 pounds) securely to the rack. Here are my questions:
What would be a good rack to purchase for this purpose?
What is the most secure way to attach the rack?
What is the best method for attaching the carrier? (All I can think to do is drill holes in the bottom of the carrier, zip tie it to the rack, and then cover the bottom of the carrier with a carpet remnant).
Is this project worth attempting?
Constructive help only, please

I need to attach a pannier to my MTB. But don't have any bolts. Help?

I've bought a pannier rack for my mountain bike. i have the eyelets on the frame but the bolts that screw in near the rear wheel nuts aren't included. Does anyone know what these nuts are called and is there a specific size for these.

If it helps my bike is a Specialized Rockhopper. Probably 2005 or 2006.

Thanks

Darren

What is the best strategy to prevent bike theft?

Hello,
I brought my near-decade-old mountain bike with me to my college campus this past summer, along with a cable lock to secure it. Unfortunately, I made the stupid mistake of leaving my bike secured to a bike rack behind my dorm building one night (although I was sure I secured it properly by putting the cable through the front tire, frame, and bike rack). The next day I went to take it to class and realized it had been stolen, lock and all.

Almost 3 months later, I decided to buy a new bike to ride at college, and I want to make sure I educate myself as much as possible to prevent this bike's theft. This is what I've learned so far:

-Whenever I'm not riding it, it will either be in my dorm room or locked outside a building on a bike rack (except outside my dorm).
-So far I plan to use a U-lock going through the rear wheel, frame and bike rack, and a cable lock to go through the front tire, frame, and bike rack.
-The seat has a quick-release latch so I plan to just take it with me when I need to leave my bike outside (during a class, for example). I know there are cable locks for quick release seats, but I'd feel better just having it with me.
-The front wheel also has a quick-release lever, but the cable lock will go through it.
-It isn't feasible for me to bring the bike with me indoors to my classes, since many of them are in small classrooms or aren't on the first floor.
-I've also read that it's best to try to lock your bike to a rack with many other bikes to reduce the risk of it "standing out" and being a subject of theft.

Aside from what I've mentioned above, can anyone give advice on what else I can do to prevent my bike's theft (in part or in full)? I'm especially wary since my bike was stolen once so I'd like to do whatever I can to prevent it from happening again.

Thanks!

Looking for rear rack to fit my Raleigh Detour (large wheel, low seat stay)?

My bike Raleight Detour 3.5 pic @ http://www.raleighusa.com/bikes/hybrid/detour-35-11/
has a relatively low seat stay and a large wheel (thus the top of the rear wheel is much higher than the seat stay). I want to buy a rear rack but most of them have 2 short rods connecting between the seat stay and the rack--since the rack is above the top of the wheel, this will not work on my bike.

Could someone find a rack for my bike? It must have a rat trap Spring load, and not too expensive, please, ~). Or better, could you point out which ones will work at Amazon.com?

Thanks a bunch.

How do I adjust/center my brakes? Both front and back ones are rubbing the tire rims…?

I have a 2007 Lemond Tourmalet (WSD), and I think that carrying the bike on my ancient trunk rack did something to the brake alignment. After I took it off the rack when I reached home, I noticed that the front brake was dragging on the wheel. It wasn't like that during my long ride. I looked at both the front and rear brakes, and they are shifted too far to the right (when you stand over the bike and look down at the wheels). Does anyone have ideas on how to adjust them? My owner's manual wasn't very helpful. for now, I adjusted the barrel so that the brakes are more open to prevent the rubbing, but as a result, I have to squeeze really hard to stop efficiently.

Related questions: would one of those bar adapter (I don't know the official name) I saw at the bike shop really help with transporting a bike? It's this bar that I (guess) you attach to the WSD bike so that it fits better on trunk racks that are designed more for men's frames.

Need To Change Axle Set-Up?

Howdy,
I have taken up bicycling recently so I'm slowly learning my way around the bike.I'm currently looking at front racks(have a rear one on) and I'm getting one with the support legs that go to the front axle.I noticed my bike has the quick disconnect wheel set-up.My question is can I use the support legs with the quick disconnect or do I need to change this to something else? Thanks a million!
